This combined sub department, which
might well take the title of ' Genral Works' Office, shoull
tako over the cxccution of miscellano ous worke, which foll
to the prosont General Works Offico. The work of the Roads
and Drainago offices is so closely allica that the placing
of it under ono head shoull have good rosults. It will bo
nocessary to rotain an cnginoer in charge of cach of the
oll sub departments, but their positions will not be of
such responsibility as that of the present caocu ti vo
ongincors,
They will simply be ongineers of sono soniority,
with the oaccutivo onginoor of the combined sub department
responsible for the wholo.
22. None of the personnel of tho oxisting General Worke
Offico should be taken over by the now combined sub tepartment;
it should bo di sposod of by tormination of employment or
absorbtion cl3cxhore into the Public Works Dopartment as
vacancios occur. Constructional work by the Public Works
Departacnt will for the next for yoars bc nogligiblc; on
the other hand maintenance work will have to continuo,
proposal amounts in offcct to a reduction in the Roads and
Drainago offices.

of duplication, for at the Railway workshops at Hunghom thoro
is of necessity a far larger workshop, which, apart from
railway works, repairs Government motor vehicles. There is
not a sufficiently large number of Government vehicles to
justify tro sets of expensive ropair tools and machinery.
